This trip consists of several short (1-mile) hikes, the first of which is rather steep. Horn Pond, Woburn. Morning.
We will take a 1⁄2 day walk, exploring the varied habitats of the Horn Pond Conservation area. The walk will focus in and around the main pond, accompanying lagoons, and marsh areas in search of early migrants and local resident birds such as Gadwall, Field Sparrow, Eastern Phoebe, Belted Kingfisher, and Tree Sparrow. Parts of the walk have uneven terrain; muddy areas are possible. Co-sponsored with the Menotomy Bird Club and Woburn Residents Environmental Network (WREN). Caps Ridge Trail, White Mountain National Forest, NH. All Day.
By driving to the highest trailhead in the White Mountains at over 3000 feet, we will have excellent opportunities for several boreal species with little effort. We will then move at a birder's pace on a vigorous hike that will climb an additional 800 vertical feet in about a mile to "pothole rock", where we will have lunch and more opportunities for species rarely encountered in MA. Moose Brook Valley, Hardwick. Half Day.
This trip consists of short hikes (1-3 miles total) and roadside birding in forest, pasture, and marsh habitat. We may encounter a few wet or muddy areas, so plan accordingly. Target birds include Pileated Woodpecker, Alder Flycatcher, Winter Wren, Scarlet Tanager, and Indigo Bunting, as well as many species of warbler. Meeting Place: Small parking lot near Old Hardwick Town Hall, Hardwick. Take Route 2 West to Exit 17 Petersham and go right onto Route 32 South. Continue to and through Petersham Center until the intersection with Route 122 at a blinking light, a half-mile past the center. Turn right onto Route 122 West and drive a half mile to the blinking yellow light at the intersection with Route 32A. Turn left onto Route 32A South and continue for ten miles until you approach Hardwick Common. As you approach the common, there will be a white church on a hill on the left. Bear left off Route 32A just past the church. The parking lot is about 100 yards on the left, in front of the Old Hardwick Town Hall. 7:00 a.m.
