About the Club

The Allen Bird Club serves area birders and others who appreciate nature by providing a forum in which to develop common interests and share knowledge. These interests are supported by an extensive and varied program.

Membership is open to anyone interested in birds and birding. Annual dues are payable by September 1 and should be sent to the Treasurer. Membership classifications are: Individual, $12; Family, $16; Supporting, $25. The public is cordially invited to any regular meeting or field trip.

Meetings are held the first Monday of each month, October through May, at 7:30 p.m. in the Tolman Wing of the Springfield Science Museum (The Quadrangle). Parking is in the Edwards Street lot one block from Chesnut Street and State Street in Springfield. Through lectures and presentations members are kept current about topics and issues pertaining to bird identification, behavior, and habitat.

The Fannie Stebbins Wildlife Refuge is our 325 acre sanctuary located off Pondside Road in Longmeadow. It can be reached by taking either Emerson Road (turn left on Pondside before RR tracks) or Bark Haul Road off Route 5 in Longmeadow. The sign containing a detailed map is at the corner of Pondside Road and Bark Haul Road. The refuge is governed by a Board of Directors elected by club members.

Founded in 1912 in Springfield, Massachusetts, the Allen Bird Club is the oldest club in Massachusetts dedicated to the study of birds and related natural history. The club name honors Dr. Joel A. Allen (1838-1921), a Springfield native and prominent scientist for whom Allen Street in Springfield was also named. An associate of Louis Agassiz and Frank Chapman, Dr. Allen became curator of birds and mammals at the Harvard Museum of Comparative Zoology and later was a chief ornithologist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. One of the three founders of the American Ornithologists' Union, Dr. Allen was its first president. He was also editor of The Auk for nearly thirty years and a leader in bird protection efforts.
