Forest Park - Springfield
Enter from Sumner Avenue. Woodland birds, ducks, gulls. Admission fee.
Bondi's Island Boat Ramp - West Springfield
Enter from Route 5. Watch for a small exit ramp marked "Springfield Resource Recovery Facility" between the Rt. 57 interchange and the Memorial Drive exit. Gives good views of the Connecticut River across from Springfield. Gulls, ducks, peregrine falcon.
Fannie Stebbins Wildlife Refuge - Longmeadow
From Rt. 5 in southern Longmeadow, take Bark Haul Road west. Cross over I-91 and continue to the intersection with Pondside Road. A large sign displays a map of the refuge. DOGS MUST BE LEASHED. MOTORIZED VEHICLES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN THE REFUGE.
Fannie Stebbins Memorial Wildlife Refuge
From Rt. 5 in northern Longmeadow, take Emerson Road westbound. Cross under I-91 and continue straight to the railroad crossing. USE CAUTION - ACTIVE RAILROAD WITH HIGH SPEED TRAINS! From the railroad crossing proceed 0.4 miles, curving left onto West Road. Just past 100 West Road, you will see a dirt parking area on your right. Park and lock your car, then follow the trail down to the Connecticut River. Shorebirds, egrets, ducks, raptors.
Mill Road in Longmeadow
This is a small area along Longmeadow Brook where a closed dirt road runs between Shaker Road and the paved section of Mill Road that extends to Longmeadow Street. Park at either end and walk the road to find brushy habitat and a beaver pond, where birds are plentiful.
Massachusetts Audubon Sanctuary at Laughing Brook - Hampden
