BROOKLINE BIRD CLUB PELAGIC SCHEDULE - 2009

Overnight rescheduled to 9/3-4, Spaces Available!

The BBC will be running three pelagic trips again in 2009, 2 to the offshore canyons (July, and an overnight in September), and the November Nantucket Shoals trip. See below for registration information.

HYDROGRAPHER, VEATCH'S, ATLANTIS CANYONS, MASSACHUSETTS

Departure point: Helen H Dock, 136 Pleasant St., Hyannis, MA

Destination: Hydrographer, Veatch's and Atlantis Canyons (90 miles east of Nantucket, MA).

Dates of 2009 trips: July 18, trip length: 18 hours. Overnight September 3 & 4, trip length: 42 hrs.

Costs: July: $120 members/$140 nonmembers will be adjusted for inflation or extra fuel expense. September: $290 members, $310 nonmembers

Leaders: Rick Heil, Steve Mirick, Jeremiah Trimble and Marshall Iliff.

Boat: The Helen H is a Chartered, comfortable, fast, 100-foot boat with padded bunks with an enthusiastic and experienced captain & crew.

Expected: Cory's, Greater, Sooty, Manx, and Audubon's Shearwaters. Leach's Storm-Petrel and all three jaegers.

Rare birds seen: Macaronesian Shearwater (2007); White-faced Storm-Petrel (2006); Band-rumped Storm-Petrel (2004, 2008); both skuas (2004); Bridled Tern (2006, 2007, 2008).

Marine mammals & fishes: Fin, Humpback, Minke, Long-finned Pilot, Beaked and Sperm Whales. Grampus, Saddle-back, and Bottlenose Dolphins. Basking, Blue, Mako, and Hammerhead Sharks. Tuna. Loggerhead Turtle.


NANTUCKET SHOALS, MASSACHUSETTS

DATE: November 14, 2009

Departure point: Helen H Dock, 136 Pleasant St., Hyannis, MA

Destination: Northern Nantucket Shoals and waters 20 miles east of Nantucket.

Trip length: 8 hours (7 AM - 3 PM)

Cost: $90 members/$110 nonmembers will be adjusted for inflation or increase fuel expenses.

Comments: We hope to see Common and Red-throated Loons, Fulmar, Cory's, Greater, Sooty, and Manx Shearwaters, Northern Gannet, Great Cormorant and a possible Skua, Common Eider, Pomarine Jaegers, Black-legged Kittiwake, Glaucous, Iceland, Bonaparte's Gulls and Red Phalaropes. Possible Black-headed and Little Gulls. Possible alcids include: Dovekie, Common & Thick-billed Murres, Razorbill (expected), Black Guillemot (expected), and Atlantic Puffin. Marine mammals: Humpback, Fin, and Minke Whales.

Also, please include your phone number and either your email or postal address for confirmation, boarding instructions, and further information.

Signed waivers are mandatory for pelagic trips.
